About this deal

The Romance was lovely to watch blossom, sometimes the person who you least expect, to be the most supportive, turns out to be the rock you never knew you needed! uk will use the information you provide on this form to be in touch with you and to provide updates and marketing. I wish I had been able to read CONFESSIONS OF AN ALLEGED GOOD GIRL as a teenager, and I'll certainly be gifting it to the teens in my life.

The friendships and sisterhood shown in this book was so needed and I loved how by the end of this it wasn’t just focused on the romance but about curating an entire community. Yes for the relatable content, humour and cuteness but for the positive Black narrative and romances that more people need to know about. Not only did I love the characters but the overarching themes concerning female empowerment and the notion that your body is your own are both incredibly powerful and important messages for young readers and I think this would be a great book to accompany any sex education curriculum in schools.

Similarly to Monique, I've had a really unhealthy relationship with sex for most of my life and this book made me feel so safe and seen. This is also the first time I’ve ever seen vaginismus recognised and discussed at length healthily in teen fiction - which is so incredible! Joya Goffney really snapped with this one and it's a book that should be in the hands of every teenage girl. Aleman’s narrative joins the ranks of heart-wrenching stories of migrant families who have been separated.

By writing her fears (as well as embarrassing and cringeworthy truths) on paper, she never has to face them in real life. While on their quest, Monique discovers the value of a true friend and the wonders of a love that accepts her for who she is. In high school, she challenged herself with to-do lists full of risk-taking items like 'hug a random boy' and 'eat a cricket', which inspired her debut novel, Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry . Goffney infuses her narrative with humor and Black culture and beautifully expands on Monique's relationships with her family. It was not until past page 30 that it became interesting and then fascinating, then essential reading. Purity culture is a disease and my heart breaks for younger me and so many other girls wrapped and tangled in its web. I had no idea this religious piece could be a cause, but I dealt with something similar (albeit less extreme) and it became apparent after I got married. There was so much he taught her and so much you could tell she simple learned from being around him and Sasha. Though I can't imagine ever wanting to talk to my mum about my sex life and other personal topics, I know if I needed her she'd be there and would want to know what's going on in my life. This story was memorable and Unputdownable I loved the characters they were very relatable, ( not Dom of course as anyone that makes someone feel not good enough for not being able to have sex in my eyes is a scumbag! Her stories are always super informative, I think this book is extremely important for young teens to learn about sex and more importantly, WAIT TO HAVE SEX. I laughed a few times and also had so much sympathy for the main character Monique, otherwise known as Mo. Given that Monique’s Daddy is a pastor at a Black Baptist church in the south, that’s quite some conflict, but church is where she gets to spend time with Dom, her “dream boy”, who also happens to be her “daddy’s protégé”. The author’s candour about the body, masturbation and conditions like vaginismus is brilliant - often funny and always informative.
