The horror is still there though, and even if there aren’t any jump scares or particularly tense stand-offs, the film is still disturbing at times. The source for the Extended Cut presentation has used the same new 4K scan as the Theatrical Cut, and a new 4K scan of the Extended Cut colour reversal internegative, producing a new 4K DI. Bullets hit with great impact, and the shotgun that Ving Rhames carries sounds like a veritable howitzer cannon. They performed a full restoration and remaster of those elements while under the supervision and final approval by the director of photography, Michael Gornick.

Romero's Dawn of the Dead on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray as a seven-disc Limited Collector's Edition box set. We still have the theatrical cut in the set, but it’s the older Blu-ray release, as it looks like they didn’t go back and remaster it for the set (the Unrated Blu-ray is updated with the new 4K master, but the Theatrical cut appears to be a bit for bit clone of the 2017 special edition Theatrical cut). It's completely open matte up to the edge of the film frame, presented as virtually square, meaning a matte to 1. They can't seem to help themselves from reverting back to the capitalistic belief that owning stuff provides comforting protection and signifies a well-valued life even as civilization collapses all around them and just outside their front doors.

It’s less informative than the others but it’s a lot of fun to listen to them get together and laugh and joke about the shoot and film.

In 1989 the rights were picked up by Entertainment In Video and they re-submitted the UK 'X' rated version to the BBFC.

As the director will admit, this is pretty blatant, so maybe subtext is the wrong word, but it’s handled well and gives the film an edge over more bog-standard horror fare. aspect ratios, the native 4K transfers are notably brighter than their respective Blu-ray counterparts, thanks to the boosted contrast balance. But the flesh-eating hordes, still possessed by an instinctive desire to consume, are drawn to the same destination.
