About this deal

She shared, in detail, her personal experiences as FGM was performed on her when she was only 5-years-old, as well as her painful issues while urinating and menstruating as she grew older. As she gives birth to her son, Leon, she resolves to give to her child, what she has never had herself: a real home. With her story Waris Dirie brings awareness to the terrible tradition of female genital mutilation in Africa. When her father attempts to arrange for 12-year-old Dirie to marry an old man, the strong-willed girl flees her family and her culture's stifling traditions for women.

I especially like the fact that she is doing this without rejecting her culture, for which is proud, something that is very important as many people use this struggle to pass their racist messages. Despite her later acquired fame and wealth, she never forgets where she came from, she still has sincere love for the simplicities in life, and still prefers to live a nomadic life wherever possible. Currently, the organization has international headquarters in Vienna, Austria and has regional offices in Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Monaco, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Djibouti , Sierra Leone and Poland.for the most part, I found her reminisces about her childhood living with a nomadic family in the Somalian desert mildly entertaining. When I see all those beautiful faces looking unnatural because they are painted in white, it really makes me sad.

While Dirie's beloved mother held her down, a local gypsy woman used a dirty razor blade to scrape away at Dirie's external sexual organs and then sewed her up again, leaving only tiny holes to allow for urination and menstruation to occur in a compromised fashion. Waris is a survivor and I admire her greatly for having the courage to talk about all the things that she so openly talks about in this book, from the FGM to fashion industry. Cathleen Miller taught creative writing at San José State University, where today she is an emeritus professor.I read it within 24 hours, and found myself mesmerised by this womans story, and how she overcame obstacles that most of us wouldn't dream of, to get to where she is today. The foundation’s team is made up of men and women committed to gender equality, human rights and all of them share Waris Dirie’s ideal: Ending Female Genital Mutilation.

A young woman tries to escape all this and after many adventures he succeeds and achieves international recognition in the modelling world, thus gaining independence and respect. WARIS DIRIE ‚Desert Flower‘ and ‚Desert Dawn‘ (summary of and background to the autobiography) fundus. More striking than these desriptions is the first hand account of a female genital mutilation (FMG) and its life long consequences. While reading „The Desert Flower" I found myself immersed in Waris' honest and simple narrative of her life.Waris was also interviewed by Laura Ziv for the magazine Marie Claire, in which she decided to tell about the cruel ritual of female genital mutilation and also her own destiny resulting in a wave of sympathy and protest worldwide against FGM. There are probably more victims of FGM than of wars in some areas- and the victims are mostly little girls. Waris μίλησε σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο για το απαρχαιωμενο έθιμο, το οποίο εφαρμόζεται σε πολλές χώρες της Αφρικής κι όχι μόνο, τον ακρωτηριασμό των γυναικείων γεννητικών οργάνων, στο οποίο υποβλήθηκε και η ίδια σε ηλικία μόλις 5 ετών.

From the moment Waris runs, the book becomes not only a survival challenge for the young girl but also a cultural and educational challenge. The fact that it is growing, not declining is awful, and that the practise is spreading due to those faiths and nationalitys that carry this practise out are emigrating to other lands, is a revolting thought. That same year, she was appointed UN Special Ambassador for the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation(FGM). Waris Dirie (the name means desert flower) lives a double life - by day she is a famous model and UN spokeswoman on women's rights in Africa, at night she dreams of her native Somalia. She travels on behalf of the United Nations around the world, participates in conferences, meets presidents, Nobel Prize winners and movie stars and gives hundreds of interviews to draw attention to her mission. Her story is a truly inspirational and extraordinary self-portrait of a remarkable woman whose spirit is as breathtaking as her beauty. The World Demographic Association nominated her as the first woman for the “Prix de la Gènèration” and the Martin Buber Foundation nominated her as the first woman for the “Martin Buber Gold Medal”. Eventually, she started working with the UN to raise awareness, about the damage done to millions of girls, because of FGM. Parts of it are humorous, parts of it make you gasp aloud with shock, and all the way through the novel, you have the upmost respect and admiration for such a strong, grounded and courageous woman. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan appoints Waris as Goodwill Ambassador in the fight against female genital mutilation.
